Shoes & Sandwiches ® , Sacramento, CA
What's with the name?
Shoes & Sandwiches is a community outreach organization that was founded in April, 2011. We began with a simple plan to pass out two very essential items to the homeless population -- shoes and food (sandwiches). We quickly gained community support and flourished into an organization that reaches out to the community as a whole by creating volunteer teams to assist the community, providing clothing to Pathways to Success for those transitioning out of homelessness and into permanent housing, and providing community outreach through our grass-roots Outreach Events and Mobile Units.
Where are we heading?
We are pleased to announce that our "Refresh Downtown" plan to incorporate empty commercial space in Downtown Sacramento into unique advertising opportunities for small business has been supported by Mayor Kevin Johnson, Councilman Steve Cohn (District 3), and The Downtown Partnership. With their confidence and support we are excited to move forward and make an impact in Downtown Sacramento.
How are we funded?
In April, 2012, we opened The Firefly Exchange, a vintage clothing exchange in Midtown, Sacramento that features recycled and upcycled fashion and decor at low, affordable prices. Profits from The Firefly are used to fund the community outreach that S&S provides. Money spent at The Firefly Exchange is well-spent because it filters right back into your community!
Our Mission:
To provide community outreach to those in need, to focus outreach in a manner that benefits society as a whole, and to inspire change at the community and policy levels.
